Criteria used to choose the best universities in Spain

Students research universities to decide which fit best with their educational and professional goals. When doing so, it’s a good idea to check the rankings of the best universities in Spain. Although there is no universal scale to measure the relative excellence of universities, there is a series of metrics which are taken into account to produce the university classification.

These metrics include:

  • Academic reputation: this is calculated by interviewing academics around the world about the merits of the university.
  • Citations per faculty: this consists in studying the research strength of each of the universities by counting the number of times their research papers are cited by other specialists.
  • Faculty/student ratio: the number of academics to students.
  • International student ratio and international faculty ratio.

While some experts believe it is impossible to objectively measure the quality of a university, it is possible to give a number of examples of criteria which could help you choose your future university. For example, the specialisms offered, the background of staff, teaching methods, student attendance, and the exchange programmes and student accommodation offered, among others.
